Growing Boys

Yesterday we had an ultrasound for the twins and the boys continue to amaze Drew and I - Baby A is measuring at 3 lbs 5 ozs. and Baby B is measuring at 3 lbs. 7 ozs. (yes, that means both boys at 30 weeks are already bigger than Cole was when he was born at 31 weeks (3 lbs. 3 ozs.)).  And yes, that means I am HUGE!  But I am huge in a fabulous way so I cannot complain - our boys are growing bigger and stronger every day and that means Drew and I are doing something right!

Back on February 15th I went on bed rest at home on the orders of our doctor in hopes that we could prevent any long term hospitalization to avoid preterm labor.  While bed rest at home was difficult, the days did seem to go by relatively quickly.  My office has been extremely supportive throughout this long, difficult journey and they were supportive of the idea of me working remotely.  Continuing to work from 6:30 - 3 in bed, a daily nap from 3 until Cole got home from class, finally emerging downstairs to have dinner and watch Cole play, and then giving Cole his last bottle of the day was a wonderful routine that somehow got me through the long days.

Sadly, all our efforts of avoiding hospitalization weren't enough.  Last Tuesday, 3/12, while I was at a routine follow up with Dr. Walker I showed significant signs of preterm labor during my ultrasound (including having 8 very strong contractions in 40 minutes).  We are extremely fortunate I was where I was when all this started.  Dr. Walker was able to give me a muscle relaxer shot that immediately slowed down my contractions.  Within an hour I had been admitted to the hospital for more long term medications and close monitoring.  While we were hopeful that I would be able to go home after a week long stay, the doctors have decided it is in the best interest of the boys' and my health for us to stay here for the duration of the pregnancy.

To be honest, being away from Cole has made this the hardest week of my life.  While Mom & Drew are going above and beyond to make sure I see him on a very regular basis - it is definitely not fair to ask a 17 month old to visit his mom in the hospital for any extended periods of time.  There are way too many cords to pull and buttons to push - the most enticing things ever for Cole - and unfortunately completely off limits : (  I think the hardest part is when he just wants to be picked up and sit in bed with me - we're on 24/7 monitoring for the babies heartbeats and my contractions so I've got monitors constantly hooked up.  Definitely not conducive to cuddling with my Little Man.

While the last couple weeks of bed rest, whether at home or in the hospital, have been extremely challenging I just keep telling myself we are doing what is absolutely best for the twins.  And in the full spectrum of life, this is such a short amount of time that we can sacrifice for the overall future health of our baby boys.  My new mantra is "each day these munchkins stay put translates to 2 less days the boys will need to be in the NICU" - that alone is enough to keep me in this bed indefinitely.

The great news is, with the help of a lot of medications, and the forced bed rest, we seem to be succeeding at holding true labor at bay.  Dr. Walker is extremely confident that we're going to make it to 32 weeks (just 2 weeks from now) and still optimistic that we can make it to 34.  But like we said, we're taking it one day at a time and saying our thanks for each day we can cross off our list.  And of course, we are exceptionally grateful for all the efforts of our doctors and nurses to keep this pregnancy going as long as possible - they're obviously doing their jobs very well.

I apologize for the long winded post (and not even a single picture!) but we wanted to make sure everyone was aware of our current status.  All our best to everyone and we will try to do a better job of posting updates and pictures :)

3 months of pictures

Contrary to popular belief, we have been taking some photos.  Lots.  But in the interest of website reduction, I'll try to keep to the highlights.

Here are the youngest boys (negative 10 weeks old).  We had a good check up today and things continue to look stable.  Great news!

Sleepy boy!
Stuffed shells sent by Grandma Pam.  Yum!
Christmas in Longview.  Yes, that is a poop face.  No, he didn't learn it by watching his father
Learning to walk.  PJ's courtesy of Patsy and Jen.  Thank you!
Naptime with Grandma Pam
Sledding in Suncadia.
Grandpa Jensen stopped by with his basketball team.  And they won that night after a spaghetti feed.
Garrett and Lauren, Cole's favorite neighbors.
 I don't trust this food.
New favorite hobby is rearranging the kitchen.  We're too lazy to baby proof the house, so its just dealt with
Nature!  Goulet
Carrying is preferred in the woods.
 Such a ham.
 Ditto.
Peek a boo is definitely the game of choice these days.

Superman!

A couple weeks ago Cole's daycare had spirit day.  This year's theme was super heroes.   I had no idea how seriously spirit day is taken at Bright Horizons...  Most of the kids showed up in home made costumes (when I say home made I mean sewn from scratch, very creative costumes) or Halloween rental quality duds.  Unfortunately for Cole, when you're mom is pregnant and miserable with absolutely zero creativity, you get a last minute costume thrown together by your Nana and your mom's coworker!

With only a couple hours notice Nana was able to pull together the base of the costume and my coworker Jon Michael was kind enough to print off the perfect finishing touch.  I am forever indebted to them both!  Overall, I have to say Cole looked 100% adorable.  And, yes, I may be biased, but I think Cole was by far the cutest super hero at school that day :)

Identical Twin Boys!!!!

Well, this post has definitely been a long time coming.  While we're grateful that our parents and siblings have been filling in extended family on our weekly doctor updates, etc. - we figure it's about time for a post on our expanding family.  As pretty much everyone is aware we were dumbfounded by the news of twins around 15 weeks (somehow the second baby was missed in our first ultrasound and subsequent 2 appointments when they didn't pick up a second heartbeat on the Doppler .  Needless to say, when the sonographer at a random appointment asked "so you already know you have two babies in there, right?" Drew and I were floored!  We couldn't have been more shocked, excited, scared, ecstatic... (can you visualize the roller coaster of emotions I'm trying to portray here!?).

After having some time to call our families with the amazing news we were shocked to hear that our doctor was very concerned that our twins were suffering from a syndrome called TTTS (twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome).  The likely outcome they gave us was the worst news any expecting parent can ever receive.  This syndrome is very rare and is only an issue with twins that share a placenta (this is how we know that we're having identical twins by the way...).  Drew and I were devastated by what our doctor told us and they let us know that they were referring us to a TTTS expert in the Kirkland area.  Fortunately for us Dr. Walker is as close as he is - the next closest doctor would be in San Francisco.

After having to wait 4 days to meet with Dr. Walker we were relieved to hear that our doctor had been mistaken and we were only showing all of the risk factors of TTTS; our twins did not actually have TTTS - an unbelievably huge difference in diagnosis that I will never forgive our first doctor for.  While the risk factors have continued to be present throughout our pregnancy both babies have been doing fabulously and continue to grow stronger every day.

I'm very happy to report that today was actually our first appointment that the primary risk factor of TTTS was not evident at our weekly ultrasound.  If our test results are as positive in the next couple weeks Dr. Walker is optimistic that we can actually reduce our appointments to every two weeks - this would be a HUGE relief to Drew and I - fingers crossed!

Today was one of our longer appointments - I was at the doctor's office for nearly 2.5 hours - and they did growth measurements on each of the boys to make sure both of them are getting enough nutrients.  I'm very happy to report that Drew's hard work to adhere to my new diet plan seems to be working - Baby A was measuring at 15 ozs. and Baby B was measuring at 1 lb. 2 ozs. Dr. Walker said we're doing great but we need to keep focusing on hitting my daily calorie and protein goals - 3,700 calories per day; 200 grams of protein per day.

In summary, while this pregnancy has thrown some curve balls our way we are so excited to report that our tests are somewhat starting to normalize and our Dr. is getting more optimistic each week.  While he said he will continue to monitor me closely until we deliver he does think that we're moving in the right direction.

I don't think either Drew or I can thank everyone enough for all their prayers, well wishes and positive thoughts.  We are so excited that our family will be growing by two in the next couple months - identical twins are not very common and we couldn't be any more excited that we are fortunate enough to be able to experience the joy!

I thought I would go ahead and post a couple photos.  The first ultrasound photo is the ultrasound that started it all - the day we learned we were having twins (referred to as upper and lower head) - 11/30/12.  The second ultrasound picture is my favorite we've received so far.  Although Baby B has tons of room to roam he typically chooses to cuddle next to Baby A when it's time to settle in for a nap. While the picture is a bit blurry I think it clearly exemplifies the love our boys already have for one another : )

These next two photos are just for kicks.  Drew took the picture on the left of me tonight - at 22 weeks, 2 days pregnant with the twins.  The picture on the right is of me at 23 weeks pregnant with Cole.  A bit of a difference I would say ; )

All our love to everyone and thank you again for all your prayers, well wishes and positive thoughts!

Cole Walks!

Long time no blog!  We've had a lot of events that we need to keep our listening of audience of 12 updated on... but most of you already know all the big news, so I'll save it for another time!

For now, enjoy watching Cole perfect his walking skills.  Grandpa Reed forced him out of his comfort zone of hugging furniture and his Lightening McQueen walker toy, by stuffing toys in his hands.  What do you know, it worked.  You would think he's raised a couple himself!

Here's some video evidence.  More good stuff to come later.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving

Well its nearly Christmas... so that means its about time to get the Thanksgiving post up!  We had a great time out at Suncadia with Cindy, Kate, Reed and Pam and a few other visitors throughout the trip. Cindy's brother Norm and his family (Monica and Kelsey) stopped by for a night, Pam's sister Karen and her husband popped in to meet Cole and our friend Garrett used us as a rest stop en route to Pullman (Go Cougs!).

Overall, we had a great time with the combined family and some delicious food.  We watched Cole perfect his stair climbing technique, played a lot of Mississippi Marbles and spent a good amount of time relaxing (see below for evidence).

Getting ready to climb!  Make sure you get this picture!

Jailbird.

Spending a lot of time on the move these days.

Almost to the top!

Mississippi Marbles underway

Off for a walk

Celebrating Fall

This post has been a long time coming....  Things have been pretty hectic around here so we're going to try and do a quick, catch up post...
Daycare had the infants dress up as a pumpkin to get them into the fall spirit - Cole did not like being a pumpkin :(
The good news is, Cole snapped out of his bad mood as soon as we put some paint in front of him  - here he is preparing to paint his gourd.

Our little Tigger : )  Unfortunately, Cole was sent home on Halloween with a 102 degree fever.  We did not quite have the Halloween celebration we were anticipating.

The angriest I have ever seen Cole :(
Cole loving his birthday gift from Aunt Melissa, Uncle Jason and cousins Jack & Maggie.  He absolutely loves this car !
Happiest pre-surgery baby ever!  You never would have known Cole hadn't had anything to eat or drink for 8 waking hours prior to this photo : )
We're hoping Grandpa Reed will be sending us some photos from Thanksgiving soon so we can do another post - Drew and I seemed to have forgotten that taking pictures is a necessity when you're trying keep out of town family updated on your lives!
